The Colorado School of Mines Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for a Research Assistant Professor (RaP) in hydrologic science. This position will lead work on high-profile NOAA funded projects to advance disturbance models and parameterizations within the National Water Model.

Responsibilities primarily include 1) developing and conducting independent research related to watershed and hydrologic disturbances, and 2) assisting in managing a research group of graduate students. Candidates should have strong expertise in machine learning, spatial data analysis, remote sensing, hydrologic and/or operational modeling.

The position will be located in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. The successful candidate will be offered a one-year full-time RaP, with possibility of extension. The position offers a competitive package of $70,000-$80,000 (with associated benefits), determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with budget availability and available market information. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop an externally-funded research program, including collaborating with relevant faculty
  • Present research through written reports, conference proceedings, peer reviewed journal publications, and presentations internally and externally
  • Prepare or contribute to the preparation of research proposals
  • Mentor graduate students and projects
  • Assist in classroom or teaching activities if needed
  • Seek and allocate research funding to cover salary and other costs


Education and Experience:
  • PhD in civil or environmental engineering, hydrology, watershed science or related field
  • Minimum 2 years experience as a post-doctoral fellow or similar experience
  • Expertise in watershed hydrology, machine learning, spatial data analysis, and hydrologic modeling
  • Experience in leading and overseeing major research grants


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Programming, machine learning and statistical analysis
  • Hydrologic and/or watershed modeling
  • GIS, Google Earth Engine (GEE), or other spatial data platforms
  • Watershed and disturbance hydrology
  • Remote sensing and satellite applications
  • Ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students
  • Proposal idea generation and proposal writing

Annual Rate

$70,000 - $80,000

The position should have enough current funding to support it for at least the first year.
