Position Description

Reporting to the Facilities Trades Manager, and under the priorities established by the shop lead, this position provides electrical maintenance services as an integral part of the operations and maintenance of the university.

Essential Functions

Operations and Maintenance (85%)
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical system problems including analyzing and systematically diagnosing electrical equipment such as motors, HVAC controls, kitchen controls and equipment, and repairing or replacing defective wiring. Determine most appropriate method of repair, impact on equipment users, materials required and recommend best time to complete repair with least impact on system users.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on systems as scheduled.
  • Perform wiring, repair of electrical controls and installation of switches, ballasts, outlets, breakers, panel boards, photocells, etc. Perform installation of interior and exterior lighting.
    Perform electrical wiring for the installation of new equipment in existing spaces.
  • Perform electrical work on new construction or remodeling projects including reading electrical schematics and blueprints and running wires for electrical outlets, switches, computer equipment, HVAC systems, alarm systems, telecommunications equipment, and other systems for the effective use of the space. Determine placement of wires, wire size and the best method for performing the work.
  • May be required to test fire alarm systems if qualified. Troubleshoot security systems.
  • Responds to requests from University staff regarding system problems. Determines nature of problem and quickly and effectively repairs the system.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
  • Plan and organize assigned work to fulfill task standards, meet schedule requirements, and maintain workload balance.
  • Work autonomously or as part of a team, depending on the project or problem being addressed.
  • Properly and safely use appropriate tools used in performing required tasks. Account for and maintain university-owned tools and equipment; repair and maintain tools as needed. Maintain a safe and clean shop space.\
  • Follow and promote established safety rules and regulations; attend safety trainings as required.
  • Work in a safe, clean, and respectful manner while performing work on campus. Work in occupied spaces with minimal disruption of campus activities.

Scheduling (5%)
  • Schedule work considering customer requests, space available and potential disruption to adjacent academic, work and living areas.

Communication / Customer service (5%)
  • Communicate with the Shop Lead, the requester, and other staff as needed regarding development and status of work requests. Coordinate with the Facilities Managers on project request recommendations, estimates, and work management reports as required.

Administrative (5%)
  • Open, update, track and complete all work orders assigned. Complete all tracking required for personal time sheets in a timely manner. Attend departmental meetings as required.

Marginal Functions
  • Supervise student workers


Qualifications

  • Completion of a four-year apprenticeship program which provides the knowledge and skills required to perform work as a journey level electrician and or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
  • Possession of a Journey Level Electrician's License is required.

This is a union position working under a collective bargaining agreement.

Salary: $44.52 per hour - This is a union position with a pre-negotiated salary
