Job Description
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering seeks applications from extraordinarily qualified individuals to fill a full-time Research Technician position. Position will provide support to researchers on multiple projects to include both laboratory and field work.


Responsibilities
  • Fabricates, installs, operates, maintains, inspects, and repairs specialized equipment.
  • Download data from instrumentation and share with collaborators
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses a broad range of scientific instrumentation and equipment.
  • Provides technical assistance, instruction, and consultation for the resolution of problems.
  • Reads, interprets, and uses, instructions, manuals and protocols to understand specifications of work.
  • Assists with training and provides technical guidance to others.
  • Performs maintenance and repair on malfunctioning equipment to include modification, replacement of parts, adjustment, and calibration.
  • Field sample collection, long term monitoring device calibration, data download and maintenance. Support researchers with groundwater and sediment collection.
  • Support drilling operations and subsequent groundwater flow testing.
  • Catalog and characterize samples for identification: labeling, tagging.
  • Preserve and prepare samples for shipping and delivery.

Qualifications
  • BS in Environmental Engineering, Geology, Microbiology, or closely related field
  • Knowledge of Aseptic technique, aerobic and anaerobic culturing, nucleic acid extraction from complex sample types, library preparation for NGS , Sanger sequencing preparation with data analysis/interpretation, Phenotype MicroArray preparation with data analysis.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and written for coordination with supervisor, colleagues, and National Laboratory partners, and contractors
  • Ability to work in a secure area (Y-12 complex) - must be U.S. citizen
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Computer skills on multiple systems. Mac preferred.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job: outdoors in various weather conditions, standing, walking , squatting, bending, lifting.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools.
  • Ability to problem-solve.
